Shiraishi Island or Shiraishi-jima in Japanese
Today we are visiting a few sights on Shiraishi Island, the tiny island found in the Seto inland sea that the locals have kept unique and almost untouched.
Day 56 – April 28th.
Today we are going to see a diferent side to Shiraishi Island as yesterday we spent a few hours of fun at the Moooo Bar and San-chan’s packpackers with restaurant down by the beach.
Lucky for us we could sleep in till 7am, then we have breakfast of coffee and a fry up.
Once we are all ready to walk through the village past fishing nets hanging out to dry after washing, fishing is an important lifestream for the islanders.
After a few minutes walking the ‘Mooo Van’ passes us and stops to give us a lift. Holding on tight we weve are way through the tight streets only just passing the edges by with a few inches to spare.
Look how close we have to drive to the walls to get by, and the van is not that wide either, the streets are certainly not made for high trafic use that’s for sure.
Eventually we arrive at the ‘Bussharito temple’ a Thai style temple on the island, and a place where you can hike up the hill to take in the views around.
Captain, Tom & I climb the small hill (Yoroiiwa) to the top which takes about 15 – 20 minutes and has a few large boulders to get around but no big deal.
A quick selfie from the top…
These are the views from the top and one to the top taken by Moni, if you look close enough you can just see us.
Once we are back down we must walk through the village to the shipping area where we wait until it’s time to catch the water taxi over to another neighbouring island, Manabe Island for lunch at a very special restaurant, one of Captain’s favourites, which can only mean one thing… Very different and special.
You have to catch the water taxi from the main land to Shiraishi Island and neighbouring islands as it is the only way to get there or by yacht of course.
We board the water taxi and shoot across the water towards Manabe Island, we are hungry, but knowing that this is a special place i’m sure we will get to sample some very special produce indeed. I’ll continue in the next post as I have lots of photos.
