Cruise Port on The Canary Islands

The canary island of Gran Canaria is in the top five most popular destinations in Spain, and whilst staying here it is easy to see why.

I guess one of the major reasons would have to be the climate which has average temperatures of 17 in winter and 25 in summer.

With some 13 million tourists in 2016 it would be fair to say that some came via cruise ships to the port of La Luz.

We have already seen a few ships visit and today we saw the Norwegian Epic arrive at around 7am. A wonderful sight to watch as she (Epic) manoeuvred her way gently into position and tied up along the dock. A short while later the 3000 odd passengers filed off like ants making their way into the streets.

At the port many passengers queued up and took the Hop on Hop off buses to explore Las Palmas. Others made their way to the famous Playa de las Canteras beach on the other side of this part of the island.

The beach is very easy to walk to and there are many places for a drink, coffee or even a bite to eat all along the five kilometre stretch. A wonderful promenade full with activity runs the entire length which makes for a pleasant stroll.

There is a large shopping center at the port if that’s what excites you or you can even find more shops along the José Mesa y López road which is not far away.

The Santa Catalina Park (Parque de Santa Catalina) is only five minutes away and here you will find lots of cafes and locals.

There is also a tourist office and bus stops.

The main bus station however, is right at the port and underground which you would easily walk past without noticing it. In the photo below the bus station is to the left and you can see the words Bus…

As you walk out of the port area you will pass the shopping center on the right and in front will be a large open area, below this is the bus station.

Depending on the length of your visit you could venture further afield on the island of Gran Canaria. What ever you decide to do, have a fun day in Las Palmas.
