Into The Second Week of House Sitting on Bowen Island
Into the second week of our house sitting on Bowen Island and we are having a great time, meeting people and getting around on our scooters.
Day 106 – June 16th.
There are no taxis on Bowen Island, the only one there was packed it in since the bus service started. The local bus runs around the island every couple of hours in different directions, east & west. Lucky for us is that Shasta has two scooters that we can use. Looking forward to getting around more freely very soon.
The weather has been a mixed bag so far and we have timed our trips to town pretty good trying to avoid any rain. We have the challenge that when shopping we can only bring back what we need for the next few days as more doesn’t fit on the scooters, but really no big deal as we use that as an excuse to go in for a coffee fix from Gino and his assistant John from the local coffee shop on Bowen Island.
The produce here is very expensive, probably due to it being an island and also that most of it is home produced organic. There are only two main stores for supplies on Bowen, one is the Ruddy Potato the other is the Snug Cove General Store with both stocking a variety of products.
The town shopping area is small, but has the usual stores, pharmacy, post, video store, vets, pub etc as well as the bakery, library, school and eateries. Bowen has a real community feel to it and I guess with only about 3500 residents it’s easy to see why.
The only way on and off is via the BC Ferry from Snug Cove to the main land, which is very busy and runs on time.
Looking forward to some good sunny days that we can get out and explore some more of Bowen Island.
